The earthquake was a magnitude 7.7 Mw earthquake that occurred on 25 October 2010 off the western coast of Sumatra, Indonesia at 21:42 local time (14:42 UTC). The earthquake occurred on the same fault that produced the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. It was widely felt across the provinces of Bengkulu and West Sumatra and resulted in a substantial localized tsunami that struck the Mentawai Islands.
Within minutes of the earthquake Tsunami in indonesia , first tsunami waves struck the Island of Simeule in Indonesia, located approximately 40 kilometres from the earth quake epicentre. The Waves between 15 and 30 metres high then proceeded to the western and northern coasts of Sumatra, causing massive damage to thousands of kilometres of coastline in Aceh and North Sumatra Provinces and the western islands. A rebound effect then occurred, with waves pounding parts of the east coast of Sumatra. Based on this sequence, the extent of flooding varied from an average of 500 metres on parts of the east coast, to two kilometres on the west coast. Seawater surging up rivers and estuaries went as far as six kilometres upstream.
The main area of Indonesia which was affected by Tsunami in indonesia is Aceh. According to the statistics the death toll due to the tsunami was about 130,406 people and missing were 36,836 only in Indonesia. The number of people who had to be displaced due to this calamity is 504,518. The total economic damage of the Tsunami in indonesia of 2004 in Indonesia was about five billion US dollars. The tsunami was caused due to shifting of two tectonic plates under the sea namely Burma plate and India plate under the sea. Prior warning of the tsunami could not be issued which had resulted in much more damage. The only silver lining of this event was that the oil and gas sector was not damaged severely which is the main base of Indonesian economy. Assistance and help from all over the world both physical and financial was obtained by Indonesia. Still now Indonesia is recovering from the Tsunami in indonesia damages caused more than two years ago.

According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, “a tsunami is a system of gravity waves formed in the sea as a result of a large-scale disturbance of sea level over a short duration of time” (NOAA 2004). The term tsunami comes from the Japanese language meaning harbour (“tsu”, 津) and wave (“nami”, 波 or 浪). Although in Japanese tsunami is used for both the singular and plural, in English tsunamis is well-established as the plural.
The term was created by fishermen who returned to port to find the area surrounding the harbour devastated, although they had not been aware of any wave in the open water. A tsunami is not a sub-surface event in the deep ocean; it simply has a much smaller amplitude (wave heights) offshore, and a very long wavelength (often hundreds of kilometres long), which is why they generally pass unnoticed at sea, forming only a passing “hump” in the ocean. Tsunami in indonesia is one of biggest tsunami in this century.
